KOMPSAT-5 satellite
KOMPSAT-5 (also known as Arirang-5) is the first South Korean radar satellite. It was developed and produced in the same companies as the KOMPSAT-3. Survey of the earth's surface is conducted in the C-range of wavelengths with variable polarization of radiation (HH, VH, HV, VV). The satellite operator is Satrec Initiative Imaging Services.

KOMPSAT-5 was developed under the Korean national development plan MEST (Ministry of education, science and technology). The project was launched in 2005 and was designed to solve state problems in the development of national radar systems. In 2005, KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) has initiated the development of the spacecraft KOMPSAT-5. The work took almost ten years, and only on August 22, 2013, the satellite was put into orbit from the Yasny launch pad by the Dnepr launch vehicle. The main tasks solved with the help of radar data from the KOMPSAT-5 satellite lie in the monitoring of various phenomena, including for the prevention of emergency situations and natural disasters.

Brief description of the shooting equipment
To obtain C-band images, the spacecraft has at its disposal a radar manufactured by the Franco-Italian company Thales Alenia Space with a synthesized aperture weighing 520 kg-Corea SAR (COSI) - operating at a frequency of about 9.66 GHz. The radar provides high image quality (nominal spatial resolution in Spotlight mode is 1 m) at any time of the day and in all weather conditions. The pictures are classified.

The satellite is also equipped with AOPOD (Atmosphere Occultation and Precision Orbit Determination) - a system that measures the refraction of the signal in the atmosphere and accurately determines the orbit. Integrated with the GPS system, the 4.2 kg IGOR receiver provides the determination of the refractive index of the signal in the atmosphere and the characteristics of the orbit to return this data to the orbiting Kompsat-5.

As an additional equipment, the image shows a station for sensing refraction of the signal of global navigation satellite system (13. GNSS occultation sounder) weighing 5 kg and a power consumption of 22 watts. This system is designed to probe temperature and humidity with the highest vertical resolution, as well as to study electrons in the ionosphere.

Main cases of using data obtained from KOMPSAT-5 spacecraft:
  • obtaining high resolution radar images for use in various geoinformation projects;
  • monitoring of marine areas;
  • monitoring of land resources;
  • ecological monitoring;
  • monitoring of disaster areas.
